Miriam Toews to be Awarded Honourary Degree

Award winning Canadian author Miriam Toews will be the recipient of an honourary degree from the Humber School of Creative & Performing Arts, Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning at this year's convocation ceremony.

Toews, who is the author of five novels and a memoir, has won the , Canada Reads, the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize and has been shortlisted for the Giller Prize. Toew's 2004 novel A Complicated Kindness spent over a year on the Canadian bestseller list.

Toews is also an actor, with a role in Silent Night, an acclaimed film by Mexican filmmaker Carlos Reygadas that was shown at Cannes in 2007 and received universal praise from critics.

Toews is a native of Manitoba but currently lives in Toronto. Her latest book is the highly anticipated novel Irma Voth (Knopf Canada).

The convocation ceremony will take place on October 29, 2011. Toews will be presented with her honourary degree at approximately 3:30pm. The entire event will held at the school's Lake Shore Campus auditorium, which is located at 3199 Lake Shore Blvd. West.
