Award-winning Canadian director and screenwriter Shandi Mitchell is the recipient of the $25,000 Kobzar Literary Award for her debut novel, Under This Unbroken Sky (Penguin Group Canada). The Kobzar Literary Award, sponsored by the Shevchenko Foundation, is a biennial award that honours an author’s presentation of a Canadian Ukranian theme. It is divided $20,000 to the winning author and $5,000 to the winning publisher.

Esteemed Canadian authors Denise Chong, Randall Maggs, Nino Ricci and M.G. Vassanji comprised the judging panel that named Shandi’s title the winner. The judges said Under This Unbroken Sky is a “compelling and poignant narrative that honours the ancestry of many Canadian Ukrainians who worked for a better life during the depression era."

Shandi accepted the award from Andrew Hladyshevsky, Q.C., president of the Shevchenko Foundation, at a gala ceremony at Toronto’s Palais Royale. In accepting the award Shandi said, "It really was an honour attending this event and bringing my book to the community where this began...This award is for my Baba and the stories that she couldn't tell."

Congratulations Shandi!
