Dear Readers,

At Open Book, we are poetry lovers all year around &mash; but every April, we get to really celebrate our love of verse with National Poetry Month! Join us throughout the month of April for interviews with poets, poetry prize news, reading recommendations, photos from poetry events and much more!

And of course, we've got our comprehensive literary event listing so you can get out there and experience live poetry!

NATIONAL POETRY MONTH AT OPEN BOOK!

We are embracing all things poetry this month at Open Book, and there's lot to talk about!

If you're looking for a great poetry collection to dive into, look no further than our Open Book Recommends: Poetry Month Edition.

And to get everyone in the poetic mood, we spoke with Joanna Poblocka, executive director of the League of Canadian Poets, about the history and purpose of National Poetry Month and her own favourite poems.

Plus we've got all the latest poetry news! Check out a round up of what's happening in Canadian poetry here:

DD MILLER'S SHORT STORY COLLECTION LAUNCHES WOLSAK & WYNN'S NEW IMPRINT!

These are tough days for publishers and writers, so we are all the more encouraged and excited when Canadian presses are able to expand. Venerable Toronto publishing house Wolsak & Wynn did just that this month with the launch of their Buckrider Books fiction imprint, after over thirty years publishing quality non-fiction and poetry.

We chatted with debut author D.D. Miller, whose short fiction collection David Foster Wallace Ruined My Suicide and Other Stories, is one of a selected handful of titles launching the imprint.

Don't miss our discussion with D.D. Miller about the experience of launching a new publishing imprint.

EVEN THE WEATHER IS GIVING OUR APRIL WRITER-IN-RESIDENCE A WARM WELCOME!

We are thrilled to welcome prolific poet and prose writer Barry Dempster as our April writer-in-residence. With fourteen poetry collections to his name, Barry is just the person to gets us into the swing of things for Poetry Month!

He's doing just that already, with terrific posts about the poetics of place, the concept of compression in poetry and the weasel word that is "perfection" — and much more! Be sure to visit Barry's WIR page for all his updates.

You can also send your questions and comments for Barry to writer@openbooktoronto.com
