Fresh & Local: Your connection to Toronto's vibrant literary scene

Dear Readers,

November updates from Open Book: Toronto:

GEORGE MURRAY'S QUESTIONLESS BOOKS INTERVIEW
Have you been following WIR George Murray's Questionless Books Interview series? If not, you're in for a treat, and if you have been following, you'll be happy to know there are more interviews coming. The series "gets a host of lit-types (authors, editors, publishers, publicists, designers, booksellerss, readers, bloggers, journalists, etc.) to finish a bunch of statements about the state of literature and the 'future of books.'" The most recent "lit-types" to fill in the blanks are: David Orr, Robert J. Wiersema, Kathryn Kuitenbrouwer, Richard Nash, Christian Bök, Julie Wilson, Alana Wilcox, Andrew Pyper, Sina Queyras and Hannah Sung.

You can send your questions and comments for George to writer@openbooktoronto.com or login and post them directly onto his blog.

OPEN BOOK WANTS TO HEAR FROM YOU
We've started a brand-new series on Open Book, "Five Things Literary," which features people who dig books telling us about the literary life in their communities and neighbourhoods. For example, if it's the birthplace of a significant author; if local writers have recently published a book; if there are bookclubs, writers' groups, children's literacy programs, unique bookstores or presses from the past or present, we want to know. If you'd like to participate, send an email to Erin Knight (erin@openbooktoronto.com) with a list of Five Things Literary about where you live.

NEW FEATURES FROM BECKY TOYNE & SAMANTHA HAYWOOD
In her monthly Open Book column, Becky Toyne writes about the benefits of literary awards. Read "Keep Your Eye on the Many Values of the Prize."

Literary Agent Samantha Haywood discusses the foreign book market in "What Sells Abroad," the latest installment of her monthly column, "Agent's Corner."

CONTESTS
There's less than a week to enter Open Book and ECW Press's contest to win a copy of Glimpse by November WIR George Murray. Find full details here.

There's even less time to enter Open Book and The Workhorsery's Pitouie contest. The contest draw will take place on November 26th, the day Derek Winkler, the author of Pitouie, guest blogs on Open Book.

AUTHOR INTERVIEWS
We like to ask writers questions about their first publication, their writing process and, in some cases, their "dream of happiness" and their "idea of misery." Read our latest interviews with Catherine Bush, Dave Duncan, Baila Ellenbogen, Ellen Schwartz, Karen Palmer, Cindy Watson, Sandy Pool and Tim Cook.

Our latest Toronto Profile features an interview with Marilyn Herbert, founder and owner of Bookclub-in-a-Box.

Also on Open Book: The Toronto Quarterly's interview with poet Clara Blackwood.

EVENT PICS
With book season in full swing, we've been posting lots of fun image galleries on Open Book. Check out the photos of readers, writers and revelers from the ECW Press Fall Literary Party, the TINARS "Ghost Launch" of Jim Carroll's Petting Zoo, Open Book's Autumn Toronto Literary Salon, TINARS Queer Film Classics and the Canadian Children's Literature Awards ceremony.

EVENTS
Readings, launches, workshops and more. Check our Events Page for literary listings in Toronto and the GTA. Have an event you'd like listed on Open Book? Please send it to Rebecca Lohse at events@openbooktoronto.com.
